Looking for a sightseeing taxi in Joetsu? IM TAXI is always glad to be of your service!
Joetsu, a historical town in Niigata Prefecture located in the northwest part of Japan, has long served as a transportation hub.
Joetsu area is known as the town where Echigo Kokuhu (which translates to the capital city of Echigo Province, the former name of Niigata) had been located since the ancient times. It is also known as the town where Saint Shinran, the founder of Shin Buddhism, had first landed after being expelled from Kyoto. Uesugi Kenshin, who is known as one of the greatest samurai commanders in Japan, had based in this area in Sengoku period (the age of provincial wars), and Matsudaira Tadateru, the sixth son of Tokugawa Ieyasu, had governed the town as a lord of Takada (the former name of Joetsu) in the Edo period. As you can see, Joetsu had long thrived as the center of Echigo Province. In the modern days, the rail transport system of Niigata Prefecture first developed in Joetsu. It is also known as a town where skiing first started in Japan, as well as the birthplaces of Maejima Hisoka, the founder of Japan’s modern postal system, Kawakami Zenbei, the father of Japanese wine grapes, and Ogawa Mimei, an author of fairy tales and the founder of children’s literatures in Japan.
